Class Application Information

The following general guidelines apply to all classes. I will e-mail you additional information such as the class date, time, and anything else you need to know for a specific class. You are always welcome to e-mail me if you have any questions.

1. Class: When class incorporates lunchtime, you must bring your own lunch. Time is short and leaving to get lunch will cause delays. Bring several bottles of water so you can stay hydrated. Always bring your driver’s license and a color copy of your driver’s license to class, you will need it for identification purposes. The copy will be attached to the Release of Liability form.

2. Safety: Safety is my foremost concern. Guns, ammunition, and shooting are potentially dangerous. Don’t bring any guns or ammunition into any classroom. Any gun you bring to the range must be safe, unloaded, and either cased or holstered. I will tell you when to holster up. We will review the basic rules of firearm safety at the beginning of every class taught. Always follow gun safety rules.

3. Firearms: Your gun must be safe, unmodified, and perfectly functioning. I am not a gunsmith and cannot check each gun. I won’t allow one that seems unsafe and I cannot repair malfunctioning guns. Basic Pistol: New shooters, a .22 caliber is a good starting point but nothing larger than a 9mm is recommended. As a new shooter stay away from very small pocket-type pistols. While they have a place, they are not good for beginners as it can be difficult to aim and control the recoil because of their short barrel and small size. Examples of small guns include Smith & Wesson Bodyguard .380, Ruger LCP, or LCPII .380. No laser or optics of any kind, no exceptions.

4. Ammunition: Bring at least the minimum number of rounds listed for the course. More is better. No handloads or reloads, only new ammunition from a major manufacturer such as Winchester, Remington, Federal or Sig Sauer. Ammunition must be in the original factory boxes just as you bought it. Don’t mix or repack ammunition. These are safety issues. Make sure your ammunition has brass cases, no aluminum or steel cases. Aluminum and steel cases can be tricky at times and don’t perform well in some guns. Basic Pistol class requires 200 - 300 rounds minimum. CWP class requires 50 rounds minimum.

5. Clothing: Dress appropriately for the day’s weather and a potentially sandy outdoor environment. No tank tops or low-cut shirts or blouses.  Long sleeves are highly suggested. Both men and women should wear pants with belt loops and pockets for spare ammunition, sturdy shoes or sneakers with socks, and a baseball cap.

6. Holster, Belt, Sling: Advanced level courses and shooters with their own equipment will need to bring a quality belt and strong side, outside the waistband holster for your handgun. Make sure both fit perfectly before class. The belt must fit you, the holster, and the pant loops, it must be sturdy enough to support the gun without flopping or sagging. No cross-draw, shoulder, small-of-back, ankle, or novelty holsters. You will want a sturdy belt that is 1 ½” wide. These are safety issues.

7. Equipment: Bring a blue ink pen, pencil, and notebook. Bring good hearing protection and eye protection, always wear them when anyone is shooting on the range. Everyone shooting a firearm must own good eye and ear protection. Use them or suffer permanent physical damage. YOU are responsible for your own safety. Basic Rifle students will need a shooting mat or moving blanket of some kind to place on the ground for shooting from the prone and sitting positions.

8. Fees: Class fees vary from course to course and are subject to change without notice. That fee covers only your place in class, not any other costs. Classes are small so that you get individual attention, places are limited and reserved in advance. Materials are prepared for you. I urge you to apply well in advance. Fees must be received at least 10 days prior to your scheduled class to avoid a $25.00 late registration fee. Fees are non-refundable and non-transferable for any reason.

9. Application and Payment: This page is part of your application. Sign it, complete the attached “Application for Firearms Instruction”, and send me both pages as well as the signed Prohibited Persons Federal and State descriptions with payment in full (no deposits or partial payments) with the completed application. Make payments to Brave Defense LLC via PayPal. If you fail the shooting test, I may allow you another attempt on a different day or with another class if space is available, for an additional fee. No refunds for any reason.

10. Special Needs: If you have any special needs, physical, medical, or other conditions please let me know in writing on your application. I can’t help what I don’t know and I want to help keep you safe. (ex: Hearing aids, heart condition, diabetes, orthopedic problems, getting up and down from the ground, etc.)

11. Standards: You must pass the NRA and/or SLED CWP written exam and the required live-fire shooting test on the range. You must demonstrate practical proficiency and safety to the instructors’ satisfaction. I want you to succeed and will try to help you, but students who do not follow instructions or who handle firearms or ammunition in an unsafe manner will be dismissed from class and will not receive a refund. My decisions about all matters related to class are final in every case.

12. Release of Liability and Assumption of the Risk: In partial compensation for admission to the class, you must execute a full and complete “Liability Release and Assumption of the Risk Agreement” in our favor and the instructors’ at the start of class. Read the agreement carefully before signing. I have read, understood, and agree to the above:
